The tires screeched along the road as Ares turned the corner near our clearing. All four boys shouted over each other in a dull, unintelligible roar. Anxiety licked up my spine, and I shifted in my seat. What the hell was going on?

Nox’s hand dashed to grab mine, running his thumb over the sensitive skin on my wrist. My gaze traced his face. A line stood out between his brows, and his hair stood straight up from where he’d repeatedly run his fingers through it. He squeezed my hand and shifted his face to look out the window. “It’s okay, Bliss.”

It didn’t feel okay.

For once, I had been relegated to the back seat instead of the passenger seat as usual. Ares avoided my gaze in the rearview mirror as Killian beat out a frantic drumbeat on the dash beside him. While Nox seemed afraid to let me go, by contrast, Rafe had moved as far away from me as possible, keeping his nose pressed to the window.

If they didn’t tell me what was going on soon, I was going to scream.

The car slammed to an abrupt halt in the tiny parking lot on the edge of the park, and my seat belt dug into my chest. I yelped when it pinched my skin.

“Fucking, Christ.” Nox removed my seat belt and ran his thumb over the small purple line on my chest. A low, menacing growl emanated from his throat when his glare whipped up to Ares. “What the hell were you thinking?”

I tilted my head to the side. The mark had already disappeared. “I’m fine, calm down.”

My words were lost. Ares was already up and out of the car, ripping my door open, and he hauled me out. He crowded me until my back pressed against the trunk, and his head dipped down to rest against my forehead. A too-sweet smell filled the air, and I tasted worry on my tongue, like dying flowers. Piercing blue eyes lingered on the sore spot before meeting my gaze. “I’m sorry, Bliss.”

I lifted my hand to his face and ran my thumb over Ares’ sharp cheekbone. “You’re acting weird.”

Killian slipped his hand in mine, interlacing our fingers, and pulled me from under Ares. “We just need to get to the clearing, baby, where no one can hear us. Then we can talk about everything.”

I pushed past him on the trail, stomping my feet with each step. My patience ran dangerously low being kept in the dark like this. Their footsteps tore after me, the air filling with citrus and bitterness. Like unsweetened cranberry lemonade.

Crossing the clearing, I turned to glare at them. I put my hands on my hips. “Start talking.”

Four boys stood in front of me. My boys.

Their eyes snapped to mine, and I had to take a step back as a tangy, bitter taste filled my mouth. Fear. It tasted like fear. My feet stumbled back as the realization hit me: I was tasting their emotions…and I’d been doing it for days.
